kiss IiI

KISS was one of my first abstract sculptures. It was also the first one that I changed to become kinetic. It is called KISS because there is one small part where the steel ribbon kisses.

Initially people perceive the sculpture as two distinct bands of steel ribbon, but it is actually one continuous strand. It is part of my investigation into Constancy and Change in nature – it is a form in itself and it also frames the views beyond, and as it moves – or the viewer moves – the nature of the framed view changes too.

I have made it in 3 sizes – number 1 is the mid-size, and initially I made it as a fixed form but subsequently I changed it so that it would rotate. Number 2 is about 3 metres tall, and we had to build a portable furnace to heat up the stainless steel ribbon to bend it to shape before polishing. Number 3 (shown here) has the option of being motorised so it will keep rotating.

KISS became the inspiration for the larger ‘Metamorphosis’
