penelope

This sculpture became known as ‘Penelope’ thanks to a young girl who lived nearby my studio at the time, who came by with her mother on the first day the I took the sculpture outside. As the girl stood looking at the sculpture, her mother asked her: ‘do you know what that is?’ and without hesitation the girl replied ‘Penelope’… And so she was!

I made Penelope in 2017 – having made a large number of sculptures using recycled materials. Personally, I loved the sliced-up drinks cans I had used in a lot of the recycled sculptures I made – in particular, the Queens Beasts – but people found it difficult to know how to value these… So I thought I would use an expensive stainless steel mesh instead.

She has similar layering to many of my other sculptures – in this case with stainless steel shapes filled with expensive stainless steel mesh.

She went to the Beaufort Polo Ground for a while; she went to Royal Ascot in 2019, and now she is in her permanent home, just outside Pewsey in Wiltshire.

Penelope is a one off, but if you would like something similar, please feel free to contact me directly to discuss a commission.
