This is a self-portrait – and like the various other figurative acrylic sculptures I have made, one of this pair comes out of the other.

I started using acrylic because of its utilitarian qualities – more associated with shelving than sculpture, and yet it has a real beauty, and it picks up every part of the light – even when it is relatively dark. We had a very old laser cutter at college which I had to stand over to make sure it kept cutting – but I now use the services of a specialist laser cutting firm in Barnsley who are very quick and efficient.

‘Outside In’ is an intriguing piece of contemporary sculpture that reflects our interest in the way we think as humans about life and the world around us.’ (Wiltshire, UK)
