I made this sculpture as a pair for ‘Girl in Dark Glasses’ – which is someone doing a headstand on the back of a horse.

At the time I was living near Marlborough, and one of our annual outings was to Gifford’s Circus (if you haven’t come across them, get on Google and book. They are amazing). The thing that the circus founders were famous for was their horsemanship, so whilst doing a Yoga Tree on horseback might seem challenging to you or me, to the circus team, they would do it with their eyes shut.

I have never done this pose with anything like the elegance of the model I used, but I do yoga within my own particular limitations, and this sculpture is something of a dream combination – the elegance of the yoga pose, and the oneness between horse and rider.
