I discussed Grayson Perry’s idea that all art is an evolution of something that has come before in my article about my ‘Female Torso’. My sculptures, Vitruvian Woman I and II are a manifestation of this idea first explored by Leonardo Di Vinci in the late 15th Century.
My evolution was to take the inspiration and create it in 3 dimensions, and then to create it as a female form rather than male. As I went through the process of making these sculptures, it became clear that I could also reduce the number of limbs to 4.
Vitruvian Woman I is made in 156 layers of acrylic. I have worked in acrylic over the years because of the resonances it brings to my work. I first used it in ‘My Space’ because its opacity allowed the viewer to perceive both the external and the internal form. I used in this sculpture because it marks it as being made in this time, and it provides a certain luminosity that changes in different lights.
