BASTET

I created this sculpture in response to a commission. The client wanted an Egyptian cat, so I based my sculpture on the ancient Egyptian goddess associated with protection, fertility and motherhood.

I start most of my figurative sculptures in the traditional sculpting way – creating an armature (typically from aluminium wire) and then building up layers of wax (it’s like the plasticine you might have played with as a child) into the shape of the thing I am making.

Sorry I forgot to photograph the armature, but here’s a video of the finished wax model…

I then depart from the traditional sculpting path – and I 3d scan the model. This allows me to capture all the information about it electronically. I then slice the data, and I re-edit each of the layers to ensure they will all go back together as I want.

I use a specialist glue to bond the layers, and I create the base - in this case with mirror polished stainless steel, and Sapele wood – to sit her on.

She is made from acrylic, which I sandblast after making her, to give her that rather opaque feel, and of course she has an earing!
