vitruvian woman

I discussed Grayson Perry’s idea that all art is an evolution of something that has come before under my ‘Female Torso’ sculpture. My sculptures, Vitruvian Woman I and II are a manifestation of this idea first explored by Leonardo Di Vinci in the late 15th Century.

My evolution was to take the inspiration and create it in 3 dimensions, and then to create it as a female form rather than male. As I went through the process of making these sculptures, it became clear that I could also reduce the number of limbs to 4.

Vitruvian Woman II takes the same form but I have used marine grade stainless steel in 86 horizontal sections to describe that form. Initially I made her with uniform spacing between the layers – as in much of my other work – but this did ‘speak’ to me, so I took it apart and started again. The result is a very strong presence. She is very stable and self-supporting; she is grounded and yet she wears her vulnerability for all to see.
